Sometimes you have to say what’s on your heart, even if you know it won’t be popular…or easy. This song was written after I heard a report on the news about how classrooms across the nation would be getting all new textbooks as a part of the much-debated “Stimulus Package.” These books were going to be “updated” to show the contributions that minorities, a group that included everybody from females and homosexuals to those of African descent…but these books would not be highlighting the framework of our moving story of how our nation was formed, the struggle of our founding fathers, or the tale of our constitution. Imagine that, history books devoid of our rich history, including the amazing victories and astonishing adversity we had to overcome to develop our great nation? They called this shift in perspective “social history.”
This news report said that the reason for this was to celebrate the diversity and contributions of social history, and if kids wanted to know more about how our country was founded that they could just learn about that online…so if you’re child wants to learn about the Bill of Rights they can check it out online, but the schools will be spending class time learning all about “social history?” Shaking my head in disbelief I made a mental note to tell my wife about what I had learned. When I relayed the information to her she simply said, “That’s how fast we have fallen.”
Her comment was absolutely perfect…it was to the point, sincere and spot-on. It seemed to me that truer words have never been spoken. Sparked by my own anger and her clarity, I started writing! Oddly enough, what came to me first was the second verse. It went like this:
“We’re stuck in a system; it’s failing us fast,
Rewriting our history, forgetting the past.
A generation of brainwashed kids,
How fast we have fallen!
The news and media, have their own slanted view,
No longer balanced, or reporting the truth.
We just believe it like a bunch of fools,
How fast we have fallen!”
This song tells it the way I see it with no apologies. It might be a bit in your face, but I didn’t want to mince any words or dilute my message. Likealso in my song “Emergency,” this piece comes with a pointed message that might not make me many friends, but it is certainly filled with truth. “How Fast we have Fallen", has a young country feel and features the talents of a great new artist, Luke A Weese. His voice is so sincere that it is perfect for the message of this song. I can’t tell you how proud I am of how this song turned out.
Sure, this song may not go anywhere, but I think that it could really resonate with the “Tea Party” movement that has erupted across our nation. And, honestly, I think this song will speak to the hearts of those who watch current events and can’t help but ask where it all went wrong.
On the chorus, I ask some questions and give the answer, it asks,
“Some have wondered, how did we get here?
What happened to us?”
And then I answered my question with these words,
“It just took, one step at a time,
One more compromise,
A turned head away,
More tolerance today,
Don’t judge me, take a stand, or tell me what to do!
Now we’re livin’ like we’ve wanted to,
How fast we have fallen!”
The first verse starts with me proclaiming,
“God’s not welcome in classrooms, and school locker rooms,
Commencement addresses, no more prayer in school.
Then we wonder why He’s not there,
How fast we have fallen!
Not welcome in government, or courthouse walls,
Congress voting in unread bills and laws.
Political agendas rule,
How fast we have fallen!”
I guess this is what happens when you get angry and are in the seclusion of your own recording studio…you don’t care what anyone else thinks!!! Okay, I really do care what others think, but I care about our country and honesty even more! The message of this song had to be said and I was determined to say it!
The bridge section of the song says,
“Darkness is winning,
Light isn’t shining,
We’ve lowered our standards,
We’re still compromising!
We’re part of the problem,
And not the solution,
We’ve blended in well,
We’re full of confusion,
We tolerate sin; no longer preach out of love…..
But GOD WILL YOU PLEASE HELP US??!!........”
This song was written to shake people up and stir them into action. You may not believe or agree with what I’m saying, but there are a rising number of people that do. My hope is that everybody that cares about our nation and future gets behind this prolific song and that it inspires some changes. I wrote “How Fast we have Fallen,” because I love our country and hate where it’s headed. We need to see a real change, or America as we have known it, and America as our founding fathers fought and died for will no longer exist!!!!
